Free agent Danny Kearns has been added to the Carlisle squad for the coming season, and the one to follow even.

The Irish midfielder ended a three-year spell with Peterborough United this summer with the 22-year-old released by the league 1 side at the end of his contract with Graham Kavanagh snapping up the player who came through West Ham United’s youth system.

Kavanagh revealed that this is the player he has been ‘working on’ for the past week or so and is very happy to get this one done, with his addition completing his signings of players to ‘work through the spine’ of the side in his view.

The boss feels that he is at an age where he can continue to improve with him looking for him to add goals to his game.

He told the official website: ‘I’ve been working on this one for ten days so it’s good to get it done.

‘I said I wanted to get the spine of the team sorted as quickly as I could and I think we’ve got that now.

‘He can play as a number ten, or wide on the left or the right, so he’ll add competition right across the midfield. He’s a ball carrier and a provider. I think the only thing he needs to improve is scoring goals but he’ll provide a lot for the team.’

Kearns did start last season in the Peterborough side but ended it on loan with Chesterfield, helping them to promotion. This is something that he also feels will benefit the club going forward with his former boss Darren Ferguson speaking very highly of him.
