Listening to the various rumours circulating mainly via the local media, suggestions that first, Dennis Booth then Billy Barr, then Andy Preece then uncle Tom Cobley and all would be the new United boss – today seem wide of the mark.

Supporters, who shoud be credited with a great deal more competency in these matters offered the name John Carver early on in this utterly baffling ‘game of guess the new manager’. John who? many said… John Carver, ex Newcastle United coach and now Head Coach at Leeds United. Highly rated and respected by Sir Bobby Robson, who, lets face facts is the highest authority on the game we love so much.

But is John Carver really an option? The aswer today would seem to be yes, most defiitely. Sources at Leeds United have today confirmed that John has asked for and been given permission to speak to Carlisle United over their vacantmanagers post. The man himself has all but said he is interested by acknowledging how hard it would be to leave Leeds, normally such statements are made to pave the way for an exit.

The fact that Blues have approached Leeds United, and a man who is in current employment, would indicate that he is the clubs number one target. Rumours that Mervyn Day will also be interviewed are perhaps a little speculative but still an open option for the club. So then, it is this reporters opinion that John Carver, if he can agree personal terms, is likely to be the new man in charge at Brunton Park very shortly.

A great investment for this club and a potential manager who is without doubt destined for great things in the game. Question is, who will be his assistant? Dennis? or will he bring in his own team? Bearing in mind Blues want to maintain behind the scenes continuity, dont expect major changes, although do expect to see the exceptional motivator that is Dennis Booth move on to join his old chum in Lancashire in the coming few weeks.
