As had been anticipated, at least hoped, Joe Thompson and Mark Ellis have signed new deal with Carlisle.

Thompson’s initial short-term deal, with the midfielder initially signing on a six-month deal in the summer after a successful trial, has been extended until the end of the season.

Having extended the deal of the 26-year-old Keith Curle told the Official Website.

‘Joe is a very likeable character who has come in and showed a real determination to settle and progress. He doesn’t cause any trouble and he has great ability on the ball. We’ve all enjoyed working with him and there is absolutely no doubt there is even more and better to come from him. With the situation he was in he’s had to feel his way back into it a little bit, but he’s done that quietly and professionally, and he’s stepped up very well, whenever we’ve asked him to.’

Now Thompson’s been challenged to ‘lay down his marker’ to earn a longer-term deal.

Thompson stays for another six-months but Ellis, after an initial loan spell from Shrewsbury, has signed a permanent contract until the summer of 2018.

Curle added, also on the Official Website.

‘Mark has settled well here and he’s shown us what he’s all about. He’s getting better and better with every game and we’re delighted that he’ll be with us until the end of the 2017/18 season. He gives us good options at the back and he’s bought in to what we want to do and how we want to do it. He’s said himself that he thinks there’s even more to come and he’s the type of character we want to have around.’

The experienced defender had made a big impact at Brunton Park since his initial signing on a one-month deal that was extended and one Curle always wanted to become a permanent one as it now has.
