Such are Carlisle’s defensive problems, due to injuries, Matty Robson had to fill in at left back against Scunthorpe.

This is a position that Greg Abbott, as he told The News & Star, feels he can fill in at if needed, however he’s keen to move into the loan market: ‘Matty has been great going forward, but had a game where he found it tough. The whole back four did.

‘It’s an area where I’d like to get some options.’

Finances are tight at Brunton Park but the Carlisle boss is hopeful of getting the support needed to bring in a loanee, he added: ‘I would like to be able to go into the open market, but I’m working in a very limited market.

‘We haven`t got the fortunes that other people have to play with. I look at Bournemouth spending £400,000 on a player in January and I feel a bit sorry for myself at times.

‘But no excuses, we will try and make the squad a little bit stronger. It’s an area where we probably need options. If I can do it with the support of the board with what we’ve got, I will try and make it happen.’

If a deal is financially viable for Carlisle then the board would most likely sanction a move into the loan market to ensure League One survival, which seems likely, and maybe even give that boost to push on for a late play off spot, which seems less likely though.
