Carlisle United`s out-of-contract defender Peter Murphy has been handed a surprise call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad for their US tour.

The 26-year-old Dubliner, who recently rejected a new, improved deal with the Blues, joined up with the Eire squad yesterday before flying out to New York.

United`s former club captain was added to the squad by boss Steve Staunton after Preston`s Sean St Ledger pulled out with a hamstring injury.

Murphy`s Carlisle contract still has another month to run, so if he plays in either game he will become the first United player to win full international honours while with the Blues since Eric Welsh, who won four caps for Northern Ireland in the late 1960s.
