Paul Thirlwell, as he told The News & Star, has dismissed talks that he could retire to move into coaching with Carlisle.

33-year-old Thirlwell isn’t a first choice pick anymore but has been, by all accounts, playing a more prominent role in the dressing and that has brought about the coaching rumours.

The midfielder though, who admits coaching is something that interests him, insists that he is as keen as ever to challenge for a place in the starting XI and isn’t hanging up his boots yet: ‘my focus will be on playing. Coaching is something I want to do but you are a long time retired.

‘I’ve got a year left and I just want to concentrate on playing games. I see it as quite challenging.

‘I’m looking forward to giving the young lads a run for their money. I wish pre-season was tomorrow, to be honest.’
