Transfer deadline day saw the ex Leeds United striker sold to Championship side – Hull City for a fee of around £350,000, blues claim this figure, Hull City meanwhile claim it was £325,000. Whatever, this most certainly marks good business for Carlisle United – Why?

Well for a start the consistency shown last season when Michael Bridges gained fitness and confidence at Carlisle United was this term, absent. Many said he seemed a different player, many said he didnt seem interested. In all seriousness, perhaps the step up to higher grade so quickly was just a bridge too far for Michael so early into his career recuperation.

Yes, people will argue that he was once a Premiership player, however, he has sstained serious injuries which incapacitated him for a long time. The question most coaches asked themselves regarded his overall fitness andmental strength. Bolton and Newcastle and indeed Sunderland had a look at him after hs Leeds days, all released him fairly quickly. So he dropped to Bristol City but he couldnt replicate the ability he was known to possess, thus Carlisle United offered him a football lifeline.

Blues stood by a player who looked short on confidence when he first arrived and sure enough he repaid them, with bucketful of goals and memories, that was in League Two. Now its a different ball game in League One, slightly stronger defenders, slightly tougher opponents, tobe honest Michael didn’t shine in any of the opening fixtures.

So he is now a Hull City player, will he move onward and upward? I seriously doubt it. Will Blues suffer for his departure? I seriously doubt it. One player doesn’t make a team.

Michael bridges sadly has a history of starting off in a blaze of glory then underachieving the following season, this was the case at Leeds and at Sunderland before them. So just perhaps we have got the best from Bridges at Carlisle United.

Whatever, good luck to the lad, he did us proud, while he was not the sole reason we wn promotion last term, he was certainly the catalyst to confirming it.
