The injury to Mark Gillespie meant that we needed to move into the loan market and ahead of our weekend game with Wycombe we confirmed on the Official Website that Raphael Spiegel had come in on loan.

Carlisle have been aware of Spiegel for ‘over a year’ now and was a move we thought of making when we signed Jordan Pickford on loan from Sunderland last season. He’ll be here for the next month.

Goalkeeping coach Tony Caig revealed that we have been aware of him for a while and with him ‘rated highly’ and ‘one with a real future’ having watched him play and having reviewed DVD footage he knows that he ‘has a very good pedigree’ so this is a move that makes sense for all involved.

‘West Ham are looking for him to make that next step and an opportunity to get out and play some football provides that opening for him.

‘He definitely has good attributes but he has to come here now and back all of that up. He’s been around the first team with West Ham, on occasions, but this is the real thing now.’

Dan Hanford will, obviously, be disappointed not to get his chance with Gillespie injured but we have to go with what we fill is ‘the best option’ and if that’s the 22-year-old West Ham loanee so be it….

There wasn’t a lot he could have done for any of the goals on his debut really was there!
