Fans Day – Not for Blues It Wasn’t

Never in the entire history of Carlisle United have they provided a straight forward – easy passage for their supporters. United’s history is sprinkled every now and then with success – but can they attain this without giving their supporters sleepless nights and worries along the way – it seems not.

Today at Moss Rose, there was the ideal opportunity for the team to climb to the top of the league two table, a position they undoubtedly deserve. Results yesterday went well, leaving the small matter of Macclesfield Town seperating them from heading the league. It was a game United should and could have won, had they bothered to turn up with the right attitude. This set of players seem to want to achieve success the hard way, today, the only way they would have won is if Macclesfield Town had not turned up.

In truth it was a performance Paul Simpson will want his players to forget, from the outset Macclesfield were keener, more willing and all round much better than United in all departments. United picked a bad time to have an ‘off’ day and were punished for their apparent lackadaisical attitude.

The United fans who had made their way to the game were devastated to say the least, a few left early muttering their disgust, most stayed to the bitter end, believing that thier heroes would somehow pull something out of the bag and snatch a few goals to give them something. Sadly, not one United player had such inspiration in them today. New boy Mark Rivers looked out of sorts and at times strangely out of his depth while the defence were left chasing the shadows of the Macc forwards. The home sides five man midfield totally dominating matters.

There are few positives to take from this game, other than United could not possible play any worse again. It is but a small hiccup in the bigger picture of things. Perhaps the manner of the defeat will serve as a lesson to those players who had adopted the wrong attitude tpo todays game, they need no mentioning here, they know very well who they are. Perhaps it is worth them realising that 1500 loyal supporters spent their hard earned money on travelling to this game and watching their team let them down so badly. But still we believe in them.
