It was never going to be classic, last time Carlisle United faced Shrewsbury in a league game saw the Shrews relegated after a 3-2 win for the Blues. This time roundm, Carlisle were looking to extend their unbeaten run, while Shrewsbury were to steer clear of the relegation mire.
True to form it was Carlisle who dominated much of the early game and took the lead through a Chris Lumsden penalty on 18 minutes. The goal though sparked new lifeinto the home team, who were ably assisted by a twelfth man in the form of referee Keith Hill.
It was Mr Hill who went on to make all the headlines from this encounter, three penalties awarded during the ninety minutes play, one for Carlisle two to Shrewsbury, each one being successfully despatched giving Shrews the three points in a 2-1 victory.
Not content with his penalty awarding antics – Hill then went onto send off United defender, Zigor Aranalde yet failed to dismiss Shrews keeper Joe Hart after he clearly and deliberately upended Karl Hawley for United’s 18th minute penalty.
Mr Hill and his assistant being the only person in the stadium who felt that Hart should remain on the pitch when clearly it was a last man challenge. Througohut the ninety minutes the referee failed to keep up with play turning this game into something of a lottery.
United boss Paul Simpson later said that his side got what they deserved – nothing, however a different referee on a different day may have been better equipped to handle the game.
