Carlisle’s interest in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy was ended in the second round on Tuesday night as our league 2 rivals Tranmere Rovers eventually edged us out after a draw in a penalty shootout at Prenton Park.

The game had ended in a 1-1 draw before Tranmere came through the penalty shootout that followed, as is the JPT way immediately following fulltime, 5-4.

We had started the game well and could have been ahead had either Steven Rigg or Billy Paynter been able to hit the target but as it was it was Tranmere that went into half time one-nil up when Jason Koumas saw his freekick parried away by Dan Hanford but only to the brilliantly named Max Power (40) to follow up.

A penalty shootout was forced with a little under 15-minutes to play as we capitalised on a slip from Jake Kirby to draw level when Rigg played in Brad Potts (76) to level it up at one-one.

Both sides had chances to win the shootout but when Patrick Brough put his effort saved by Tranmere ‘keeper Peter Brezovan it was left to Ben Davies to win it, which he did as he kept his nerve to win it 5-4 and send Tranmere into round three.
