Chester boss Keith Curle descrbed yesterday’s game as ‘men against boys’. Certainly no one in the 6,000 plus corwd would disagree with him as Carlisle United simply oozed with class, confidence and quality to blow away their opponents with relative ease. Even before Adam Murray put Blues into the lead on 14 minutes, United had goalscoring chances and could have been two up at that stage.

Michael Bridges was simply at his best, his touch and readiness to take the ball at every opportunity was apparent for all to see, to cap off an excellent all round performance from the blues striker came a wonder goal which virtually wrapped the game up. Receiving the ball he wlatzed past two Chester defenders before firing the ball inot the top corner, Brunton Park erupted and Bridges received a deserved rapturous applause for what is likely to be goal of the season at Brunton Park and elsewhere in this league.

In the second half it was the turn of United keeper Keiron Westwood to show his class, saving a Michael Branch penalty with consumate ease. Later, on 58 minutes Chris Lumsdon made it three nil with further goals added to the United tally by Karl Hawley and Glenn Murray.

The performance was truly outstanding, the best from a Carlisle side for many many years. Man of the match, well it has to be Michael Bridges who netted his seventh of the season for The Blues..but in truth each and every player deserves credit for this one. Roll on next weekend and a visit to Leyton Orient.

Congratulations on moving to the top of the league. Hopefully, both Gretna and Carlsle will be celebrating promotions at the end of the season, which can only be good for the region.
