A crowd of 6,723 witnessed United win what could be a vital three points against a tough tackling Lincoln City at Brunton Park this evening. It took a good deal of resilience to finally break the Imps defence, but when it happened it was pure quality. A ball was played through from Chris Lumsdon to Michael Bridges who rounded the Lincoln keeper to score the vital breakthrough goal.

To be honest it was no more than United deserved as Lincoln had defended resiliently and at times overtly roughly, the referee and his assistants appeared to miss far too many fouls which were simply bad. Ultimately it matters little how poor the officials were, albeit they were at best woeful, as United took the points to extend their lead at the top of the table to six points. Lincoln did actually strike United crossbar early in the second half, but that was about all they offered, other than the wrestling tactics they employed so well.

In the end United deserved this, Lincoln were nothing but tough and deserved nothing from the encounter. The claim by their boss, Keith Alexander that they are possibly the best team in this league, appears tonight, to have been based on a fairy tale. They came for a point, offered little and got what they deserved ? a miserable journey home.

The Blues now have five days rest before they take one Swansea City in the final of the LDV Vans Trophy at the Millennium Stadium, whilst this game may have taken some of the energy from the side, it may well have offered more injury problems through Lincoln?s awful strong arm muscling tactics.
