United Boss, Who’s Next

Todays news that Paul Simpson has turned on his heel and done a runner to Preston North End is a real irritant to the loyal fans of Carlisle United, for them, he couldn’t have made a worse choice of clubs! Its history now and the big search is no for United’s next boss. But for me, there are just two options available to the club…

Forget your Peter Reids and Mick McCarthy’s neither are suitable at this level, McCarthy is a perrenial struggler and Peter Reid, well he hasn’t got a clue about manageent now, he lost the plot at Sunderland and has messed things up everywhere he has been since then.

Two choices would take United forward, two managers who know there way around the game and would develop our playing squad to Championship standard:

Stan Ternent – Ex Blues and devoutly loyal and experienced man and manager. He deserves a crack at Carlisle, a club where he is still revered as a player and respected as a manager. Stan knows football inside out, he would probably relish the chance of coming to Brunton Park – downside being, he would probably be financially out of our affordability.

Mervyn Day – Ex Blues, dismissed by the one time tyranical dictator who thiisted for greater wealth and fame. Mervyn was way too ambitious for Michael Knighton hence he was pushed out the door. since then any believe him to be the brains behind Alan Curbishley’s success at Charlton. Would he want to return to Carlisle though? It is often said you should never return to a club where you have previously been a manager. Mervyn would undoubtedly take us on promotion journeys. Downside, again could we afford him?

What we definitely don’t want or need.. Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle, Paul Gasgoine, Phil Parkinson, Paul Baker, and definitely not Mick Wadsworth. We need a progressive coach who has proven himself and served his time elsewhere, someone who knows the lower leagues well. It’s got to be Stan Ternent.
